The Abuse Cycle

A boulder stands not too far from shore, with such a beautiful view to enjoy each day. On one side, a vast lake teeming with life, offering abundant opportunities. The lake is his home, his everything. He watches each day as the boats pass by, and when he looks behind him, he sees an endless parade of people coming to embrace his home as he has. She is spectacular! And most come see her on her most beautiful days. But even when no one is there, he stands proud, guarding his home. But what in return? Endlessly he is carved away. Day after day, year after year, he allows the lake’s gentle caress. But some days, she is not so gentle. Sometimes she shoves and slaps with such force that he cannot help but wonder how long he must endure the storm. These moments change him, not obviously, but slowly over time he is different and affected, both by gentleness and by harshness. But still he stands tall- the lake is his beloved. The lake is all he’s ever known, and until the end of time, he’ll take whatever she gives.
