Turquoise Butterflies

(WARNING: Somewhat graphic descriptions of gore)

A cloud of dust formed in front of me as a swarm of turquoise butterflies came flying out of it. I put my arm in front of my nose and mouth as the ash and dust spread out. It settled rather quickly as it was raining, a skinny man wearing all black emerged and stepped forward

I looked at him with a stern look and nodded to address him.

“Boss.”

The skinny man walked closer, butterflies flew out from his trench coat as he put up his finger.

“You did so well last time, that I would like to see it again.”

I didn’t say anything as dust started pouring out of his coat sleeve. It started swirling around me and I closed my eyes. When I opened them again my vision was all white, the only thing I could see were the butterflies which were flying towards a black figure.

“Her.”

I took a deep breath and started walking towards her. As I got closer the black faded away and seeped through the ground. The girl was entirely visible, though everything around her was still white. She couldn’t see me as I stood in front of her, put my finger out, and watched as a turquoise butterfly landed on the end of it. I looked her dead in the eyes as I placed my finger in between them. The butterfly stretched out its wings and ignited into a blue flame as black dust and smoke engulfed her. She took a breath which turned into a large inhale as she gasped, the ash and smoke flowing into her lungs. The smoke had gone and left her standing, staring off into nothing. I took some steps back and watched as her pupils enlarged until they took over her entire eye. She started mumbling incoherent words and kept looking into nothing as she dropped the groceries she had clutched in her fists. She walked to the closest building and started slamming her head into it. A couple bystanders including the small market owner came running towards her, pulling her back as they tried to reason with her. One of them got on the phone with the cops but ran over to help the others who tried to hold her down. She was struggling, not looking at any of the guys, her eyes watered as she bit down on her lip. Blood seeped from her head and some beaded on her lip. They held down her arms so she laid there scratching her fingers at the pavement, removing the skin as they started bleeding. She still sat mumbling as the boss walked over to me.

“They’re slowing the process, get them too. Three extras won’t hurt the assignment.”

I nodded and walked up to the woman being held down on the floor. I crouched down and pressed two fingers on two of their heads. They let go of the woman as I waited for the process to finish before I placed my fingertip of the market owner’s head. All three of them sat on their knees around the woman who immediately got up and went back to hitting her head.

The three men stood up, one of them started scratching at his eyes, trying to dig his fingers behind them. Another started ripping out his hair, as he ran into the street as a truck was coming closer. The truck driver had no time to react and slammed on the breaks but it was too late. The store owner’s head was cracked open, blood was pooled and strewn around the street as he was smeared into the pavement. The driver got out and looked distraught as he ran to the person’s aid. He heard a commotion so he looked over and saw the woman on the floor, face unrecognizable as the front of her scull was bashed in from the wall. Blood coated the whole shop, the man was too stunned to do anything. He shakily reached for his phone and stumbled back to his truck. He dialed 911 and looked up just in time to see the third man run into the shop window, the glass shattering around him. He stuttered on the phone and tried to hold his phone as still as he could as he spoke.

I walked up to the woman and crouched above her, dead. I opened my hand above what used to be her face and let a turquoise butterfly fly into her mouth. I stood back up and started walking towards the shop. I entered through the door which was wide open and saw one of the guys on the floor, his eyes were on the floor next to him, glass was in and around his mouth as well as stuck in the palms of his hands. Again, I opened my hand above his mouth and let a butterfly fall in, the sound of its wings against his throat echoes through my ears. I stepped out though the window and over to the truck with the man who was freaking out. I crouched down in front of his truck and this time opened the guy’s mouth with one hand and let the butterfly crawl in from the other. I stood up, walked back over to the shop, and glanced in the window to see another butterfly crawl into his eye socket. I walked past the woman who had a butterfly crawl out of her nose which was hardly there, and I walked over to my boss who was standing a little ways down the street. He nodded at me before ash and dust rose from the ground and swirled around him. Some butterflies flew into the smoke and some flew out. The dust settled and I stood in the street. I looked behind me at the bloodied block and sighed before returning to my original state as I walked onto the sidewalk.

But I could ever see were turquoise butterflies…
