fly (or not)

I grab my sister’s hand and pull her towards the cliff edge with me. She nods slowly in my direction. Then we jump. The air rushes by us. I let out my wings prepared to catch Lucy, if she can’t stop herself.

She lets out a scream of excitement with a giant smile on her face. I let her fall a bit more. Her wings working to keep her in the air. Her wings were smaller than her, a deep red that looked gorgeous with her dark skin. I envied her wings they were much more colourful than my gray.

Her frail wings flapping desperately trying to soar. Eight was a young age to start flying. I couldn’t blame her when she finally gave up. I caught her small form in the air and lowered to the ground.

Tears welled up in her eyes. “Mother is going to be mad,” Lucy said. “Yes,” I crouched down to her level. “But I will always protect you” I gave her a soft smile. “You’ll always catch me?” She said with a smile. I hesitated. “Ray-Ray?” Her smile starts to fade. “Yes, always” the lie slides through my throat like gravel.
