The city yawns The subway hums
The balcony cat stretches out in the first rays of sun A day in the city has just begun
People walk and jog and run Some are late some claim it’s fun
The tram rattles The cars groan The city is full I stand alone
With all this noise It’s easy to forget To sit in silence To ignore the regret
When they were here all that noise melted away But now it’s just another loud city day
And in the mist, a wave of calm washes over me. Nothing like feeling lost at sea, unreachable to the world, setting out to new, uncharted lands. Where was I before this moment? It hardly seems to matter anymore. I care no more about what happened then, as I do about which direction I take next.
I walk on, North, maybe? My feet seem to make a judgement call on my behalf and I trudge deeper into the unknown. Past miles of brown, bristly grassland, my hands brushing against the misty cloud around my waist.
The ground is wet yet my trusty boots remain dry, even as I squelch, squelch, squelch with each certain step. Where am I going? Where have I been?
The grass looks so ticklish yet now it feels like nothing at all. Almost soft to the touch, feathery, welcoming, perhaps I should stay here for a while. Rest my body and my bones beneath the mist.
But still, my feet carry me on, squelching and squelching until finally they have decided to hand back the reigns and my body jerks to a holt.
Down at my feet a path emerges. This place was windless moments before but suddenly a soft breeze brushes through my hair. It is whispering my name. I think it’s my name? This misty path that shines even with todays grey sky is beckoning me forward. The calm washes over me once more. I walk on.
