Camp
I sat on the stump and gazed into the flames.I watched as they danced and sang their old crackled tune, sending light into the moonless night. Somehow I felt myself drawn into their mystery. I was sitting close enough that the heat was starting to singe the hairs on my arms, but by moving just a hair back I would lose the feeling and warmth of the fire entirely. The smell of the burning wood made the night feel like home. As frightening as the darkness around me was, I found great hope in the little circumference of light that was shining into the shadows as far as I could reach.
It’s funny how much this fire is like our life. We never want to go beyond the reach of its light, because this is where we find safety.
Good night world!
Sign
“You good? ” Mabel signed from the other side of the store.
“Fine.” I signed back. I walked briskly to the checkout line in the store where I met her.
“You looked like you needed to escape” she signed.
“I did. A lady came up to talk to me and I couldn’t figure out how to tell her I’m deaf” I replied. “She walked away when I looked at you.”
“She probably thought you were being rude!” she said with a laugh on her face. Must People were offended when they felt like we were communicating over their heads.
I could have chose to wear a tag saying I was deaf. But I didn’t want to be treated different. I have only been deaf for about a year now, and I have barely mastered the art of signing. I could try talking but I can’t hear my own voice so I don’t know if I’m yelling or even making a sound.
Mabel has always been my best friend. When the accident happened she was always right there with me. She learned sign language so that we would be able to communicate and she could translate for me.
The Race
She looked over her shoulder to check out her pursuers. This look may have cost her more that she could pay.
She paddled as hard as she could, her muscles aching with every movement. But she couldn’t stop. This was her life on the line. She neared the final bend and realized her pursuers were closing in.
But she knew she could do it. She knew what it would cost. She knew this was a price she couldn’t pay.
But her pursuers kept inching ahead until they were neck and neck. The finish line was 50 feet ahead. But her opponent seemed to have the advantage. He crossed the finish line a few feet ahead.
He turned and said the most humiliating words in her life: “I told you I’d win.”
(Sorry it’s so short.)
The Lab
Liam was wierd. I mean, he spends all his day in a science lab with another professor, and when he comes home, he talks about their latest and greatest project. He was a science Psycho. He was also very paranoid, always talking about someone trying to steal the information they were working on. That’s why I didn’t believe him when he told me he was being followed.
But on day, he didn’t come home.
A few days After alerting the police and doing all the stuff you do when someone goes missing, I decided to go check out his lab where he was working to see if I could find clues about were he could have been.
Boy was I surprised at what I did find.
Apparently, they were working on a project that allowed for time travel, but they started testing before they developed the program that sent them back to this correct time.
According to the documents, my brother was stuck somewhere between Egyptian history and the Industrial Revolution.
The Soldier
He comes home From active duty To greet the woman He Promised his life to But as he approached her He knew something was very wrong
She didn’t look happy to see him Instead she looked Bored Like she had better things to do The love the used to glow in her eyes Was no longer there
She gives him a hesitant hug But with no passion Her touch seemed cold and lifeless She says nothing as they get in the car Where there once was softness Now all had turned to stone
He didn’t know what was going on He wanted to break through to her But he just couldn’t figure out how She seemed to be a different woman Then the one he married Some 15 years ago
Weeks went by and little changed But the tension seemed to grow He still couldn’t figure it out He wanted to fix this To prove himself But he had no idea how
And it all came falling down when a strange man Shocked him with the words, “You have been served.”
My Awkward Attempt At Romance…
He slowed to a halt and peered out the window as he asked the fateful question: “Need a ride?”
I smiled mischievously. “Well you can’t take my home because my trucks still here, but you can drop me off at it.”His eyes sparkled. I knew there was something there. Something between us. But neither of us could put it into words.
“Well hop in and be sure to get you where you need to go,” he said with his country drawl. That was one of the things I loved about him.
We’d only known each other for about a year now, and in the beginning we had sworn that we would have nothing bigger than a friendship. We argued, we debated, we argued some more. Things had gotten a little ugly a few times. We weren’t afraid to speak our minds to each other. And though this intended to keep it at an honest friendship, it actually grew our relationship into something so much more.
He parked near my car and put it in drive. We sat there in silence for a while, just enjoying being in each other’s presence.
He turned to me so quickly and so dramatically I was startled. “You wanna go out sometime?”
“Dallas, you remember what we agreed to. Nothing more than friendship.” I quipped. I wanted to see how he’d respond before I gave him an answer. I didn’t want him to feel obligated to take me out anywhere just because.
“You didn’t think we’d actually stick to that did you? It feels like everything we’ve done to try to keep this just a friendship has ended up bringing us together.”
He read my mind. “ I would absolutely love to go out with you, Dallas.” His eyes melted as he heard the words he had been longing to hear for a long time.
“How ‘bout we go to that dance on Friday night?”
“You know I can’t dance.”
“I can’t either” He remarked. I laughed.
“As they say in the vernacular, ‘you’re on!’”
There was something about him I could grasp but it’s what I loved. Maybe it was his chivalry, his passion, his genuine self. He was always doing for others. He made sure everyone else had before he did. Neither of us had ever dated before so we knew that it would be a little awkward.
I got out and got in my truck. This was something I had been praying for for a long time. And God brought him right to me.
All My Love
You beauty is so alluring. I’m staring in the face of perfection. Somehow, I can’t take my eyes off you. I know I have to make the first move, but I don’t know where to start. I love you but your powers are too strong….they scare me.
I’m afraid of what might happen, what I will have to pay, if I continue to live like this. Yet my eyes well with tears at the thought of losing you to someone else’s appetite.
“Cora,” a voice interrupts my thoughts. “Are you going to eat your breakfast?”
I quickly brush the tears away and look up to see my mother’s confused face. “You ok?” She asks, sounding a little concerned. This wasn’t the first time I had acted like this.
“I’m fine,” I readjusted myself. Yet I couldn’t help but take one last glance at your face.
Your eyes were a strawberry cut in half. Their shape almost made you look like you were laughing at a joke I said. Your smile was formed out of banana slaves with blueberries for freckles. Your complexion was that of he golden color of a fluffy pancake.
The thought of hurting you broke my heart.
But I dug in anyway. After all, you can’t start your day on an empty stomach.

Kallie continued staring at at her computer. The odds were stacked up against her. The organization she worked for had found out what she had been doing, and she knew that there was someone out there waiting to take her out. With the secrets she knew about the company, she was a serious threat to them. She already had a small bag packed with all her necessities. All she had to do was complete her mission.
“This is the only way.” She whispered softly. She knew that what she was about to do would change everything for her. But she had to press on. She must go on. The future of her country depended on it. She finish the program and pressed enter. She went back to the company’s database to make sure that all her history had been erased. Her computer files, her assignments, and any record of her even being there. Gone. She knew they probably had copied them anyway. Time for phase two.
She switched to her set to work on another program. She finish and pressed enter. The lights in the apartment building shut off. She whispered a quick prayer under her breath as she slide her computer in the bag, climbed out her window into the night and took off.
Ten minutes later. Her apartment exploded. She pulled out her fake ID, and the rest of her disguise. The blonde Kallie Hayes was now redhead Shelby Bryant.
