Look up
But don’t forget to look around
What’s out there isn’t always better
Sometimes the grass is greener where you are.
Dream
But don’t forget what’s real
The beauty of the mundane
The day to day that’s easy to forget
Until something changes
And we’d do anything to get it back.
Wander
But don’t let yourself float away to the moon
Or you’ll miss the flowers under your feet that bloom....
The biggest window in my apartment
has a view of a concrete wall.
Disappointing, I know
but that’s life in the city, sometimes,
because once the sun goes down
the view gets pitch dark
and I can stare into the void
wondering what’s out there.
Imagining a view of something beautiful
a land without walls....
When you yearn to forget
Where you come from
How are you supposed to know where to go?
Or how to grow?
Without a map for guidance,
bound to make mistakes
take the wrong exit,
end up in a town that wasn’t meant for passers-through.
Fit in
and break the mold
Let them know that where you came from
isn’t where you’re headed -
isn’t only what you know....
I found myself waiting
Even when I didn’t want to
But didn’t feel like I had a choice in the matter.
Doing anything I could to not watch the clock
Time ticking away so slowly
I could have sworn it stopped.
I didn’t want this -
This feeling of always being second, third, fourth, last…
To whatever else wanted your attention.
I didn’t want to keep waiting
So finally, I didn’t
And found myself....
“I love you even when I’m mad”
She said right before the follow up
“But I don’t like you.”
The words peck at the seeds deep inside my heart
That we watered together
Before the lake froze.
I want to escape the cold like a migratory bird…
I know better.
There must be more than this
but can’t resist returning to the north
Before the southern season is up.
Is there more than this?...
