Chayse & Adair (2)

“Adair.”

My eyes search in the dark of the telephone booth for him. I can’t see him, but almost every part of us is touching.

_Is it hot in here, or is that just me?_

“Yea—Yeah, Chayse?”

_Did he just press closer to me?_

“How did we end up in here again?” Chayse asks, attempting to stretch in the confined space.

“Um…” I stutter, closing my eyes in an attempt to block him out completely. _That doesn’t work; it only makes me relish it more. _“Weren’t— weren’t we supposed to call the agency?”

My shoulders tense as I feel his arm reach across me, continuing to shrink as Chayse pulls away.

“Oh yeah,” he murmurs, gripping what I now recognize as the phone. I shift on my feet.

“Why can’t we get out?”

That’s not the question I wanted to ask.

_How did you forget what we came in here for? And why did you come in here with me? _

A small smirk lights up his face, and while I’m surprised I can see it, I don’t hate the fact I can.

“I don’t know,” Chayse replies, his voice deeper than I remember.

_He definitely just got closer. His chest is only a centimeter away! _

_I would survive winter even if I was just wearing shorts and a tank top if I was next to this man._

_And I _am_ next to him. _

“Chayse, why are you so close?”

He shifts away.

“Sorry, I must’ve misread the signs…”

_What? _The butterflies betray me.

“What do you mean?”

“I thought… I thought that you— never mind… it’s stupid…”

Chayse turns, his shoulder nearly meeting my face hurriedly.

“What did you mean, Chayse?”

“I thought you liked me.”

“I do like you.” _Like a lot. I like you a lot, Chayse. More than anything I’ve ever liked._

He faces me again. The light reflects off of his tempting hazel eyes that remain fixed on me.

Chayse’s words jumble together before finally reaching an audible sentence. “In… In what way?”

“Um…”

_What will he do if I say like a schoolgirl crush?_

_Kiss me?_

_Scream for help?_

_Slap me?_

“That’s what I thought,” Chayse remarks, closing his eyes with a sigh.

“No, wait!”

I lean up, balancing on my tip toes as I kiss him on the cheek. “I like you like I like cabins.”

That draws a chuckle out from his chest. The tension in his shoulders relaxes, along with the frown that had been sitting on his face. “So, if the world was ending, you’d save me over anyone and anything?”

_He’s taunting me._

__

_How dare he!_

__

__

“Not over cabins actually. They’re too awesome to be compared to you,” I say, trying to sound snarky or cute or something like that, but just coming off as pathetic. I slap myself mentally. “I am so sorry, that was so lame—”

“I like you way more than you like cabins, Addie, and once we get out of here, I would love to prove that.”

_Butterflies again._

__

__

“Prove it?”

“I want to kiss you the right way.”

“Not on the cheek?” I suggest, secretly excited for the idea.

“No, Addie,” Chayse exclaims, a smile treading his face as he pulls me in a hug, my body flesh against his once more. Swiftly, his lips meet mine for a second or two.

I am utterly star struck.

_I love this man._

“That’s what I meant,” Chayse declares, pulling me tighter in the hug.
