Santiago, The Truth

Never trust a survivor until you know what they did to survive. The young Clare Lawrence, 17, learned that harsh truth after being with Santiago Reyes, the cook who works at a local restaurant near her house. Santiago had a dark secret that he kept hidden from everyone, even Clare. He was one of the few survivors of the **Great Plague** that wiped out half of the world's population ten years ago. He had escaped from a quarantine camp in Mexico where he had witnessed unspeakable horrors. Clare was shocked to hear this and wondered what other secrets Santiago had been keeping from her. But, Santiago was 56 and an adult. She was just a teenager who came to eat in his restaurant. One day, Santiago sensed Clare's curiosity and fear, and decided to tell her more about his past. He said that he had been part of a group of rebels called “True World” who had tried to expose the truth behind the **Great Plague**. He claimed that it was not a natural disaster, but a **biological weapon** created by a powerful corporation. Santiago showed Clare an old laboratory in the underground bunker of his house. There, Clare saw rows of glass tubes filled with strange liquids and wires. She also noticed a large metal door with a sign that read "**Danger: Biohazard**". Santiago told her that behind that door was the source of the **Great Plague**. He said that he had stolen a sample of the virus from the corporation and brought it to his lab. He wanted to study it and find a cure, but he also wanted to use it as a weapon against his enemies. Clare was horrified by Santiago's plan and begged him to destroy the virus. Santiago refused to listen to Clare and said that he had waited too long for this moment. He said that he wanted to avenge his family and friends who had died in the Great Plague. He said that he had a list of targets who were responsible for the outbreak, and that he had planted bombs in their locations. He said that he only needed to press a button to release the virus and trigger the explosions. He said that he would spare Clare, because he loved her as his own daughter, but he would not let anyone stop him. He reached for the button, but Clare grabbed his hand and tried to stop him. They struggled for a few seconds, until a loud gunshot echoed in the lab. Clare fell to the ground, blood spilling from her chest. Santiago looked up and saw a man in a black suit holding a gun. The man said that he was from the corporation, and that he had been tracking Santiago for years. He said that he had come to retrieve the virus and eliminate Santiago.
