Write a short story about a character who has spent their life learning an intricate craft that is now becoming obsolete.
Her Light
Ruby sat in her living room staring out the window at the misty fog hovering over the ground. She thought about her life and how grateful she was to have her passions. Her greatest passion was books. They were the one thing she couldn’t live without.
Everyone has that one thing they love. Ruby’s is reading. It’s her thing.
Nowadays, it’s almost rare to catch somebody reading a book. She would see the one girl sitting in a corner like she’s not even in the room. She loved that feeling. It feels like she’s the only person alive. Ruby can live thousands of lives through books and make thousands of friends. Her family always judged her on how much she spends, but it’s all worth it.
Books are her light in the darkness. They helped her make it when her mom died or when her grandpa got diagnosed with lung cancer. Books helped Ruby find herself when she was lost in the dark.
No one knows that feeling anymore. Everyone’s head is stuck in their phone constantly. People idolize social media. All social media does is just make us feel insecure. Books build our character and confidence.
People used to bully Ruby about reading. They used to say she was a nerd. She loved when they said that because she took it as a compliment. She felt like she knew who she was and she didn’t care what others thought about her.
She could never make friends in school, but books gave her the best friends she’ll ever have.
She wants to bring this joy to people. She wants to build those friends that everybody needs to have. She wants to see how her thoughts can inspire people.
That’s why she writes. She writes for herself, but mainly for her readers. She loves getting a like and knowing it affected someone somehow.
Books started everything for her. It’s her one intricate craft of which nobody should be deprived of.
