The Poster

“Promise me you won’t laugh at me.” Joy begged, her cheeks beet red and her eyes glued to the floor.

Hana stood leaning on the kitchen counter, staring at her little sister. She was mid bite, thoroughly enjoying her ramen. she chewed and stared at her sister with her brows furrowed.

“what happened?” she asked after swallowing.

“I can’t tell you until you promise not to laugh.” she hissed, gazing up into Hana’s sharp eyes.

“fine, I promise.” Hana said carelessly, motioning for her sister to continue.

Joy stared at her wearily for a moment, but eventually decided that if anyone were to laugh at her, it was better that it was her sister and not someone else.

“you know that boy i told you i like?” she started, her face already flaming once again as she remembered her eventful school day.

Hana nodded slowly, still chowing down on her food, but listening intently.

“well…um…prom is coming up. and, like, Jenna was like ‘it’s now or never, Joy,’ and so I was like ‘you know what you’re right,” and so,” she took a breath, puffing out her cheeks as she exhaled. “i made a poster.”

“you did not.” Hana blurted, pursing her lips and grimacing.

“oh, i did. and his last name is Schmidt, but it’s pronounced, like, weird.” she explained. “so, like, i didn’t know how to spell it.”

Hana furrowed her brows, not seeing how that had her sister so embarrassed. Joy was an outgoing and silly person, a spelling error shouldn’t have embarrassed her the way it seemed to.

“so?” Hana spoke.

“so… it’s spelled s-c-h-m-i-d-t” she started. “and i spelled it like s-h-i-t. so the poster said ‘james shit, will you go to prom with me.’”

Hana stopped chewing her food. oh. she looked at her sister incredulously, staring at her without blinking for a moment. her sister stared back at her, a pout on her lips and her arms crossed over her chest. they started at each other for a couple of seconds.

and then Hana spat out her noodles, a loud laugh bursting from her lips. she tried to cover her mouth to stop her cackles from spilling out, but it was no use. her abdomen repeatedly contracted, laughing until she had no more air and could no longer make noise.

“you promised! you big liar!” Joy stomped her foot and shouted.

“i-i’m sorry.” Hana barely got out, tears starting to fall from her eyes.

“ugh!” Joy stomped off to her room.

meanwhile, Hana gripped the counter, still laughing so hard she thought she would pee herself. she lost her grip on the marble counter suddenly and dropped to the floor, rolling around on her back and wheezing.

“you suck!” Joy yelled, her voice muffled.

Hana only laughed harder.
