How It Should Have Gone

“There is nothing left for me here, everyone that I love is gone. I’m alone in a country that isn’t mine and I have no where left to go except back to my home.” I rasped through my tears.

“Not everyone, I’m still here and I promise I will be by your side through it all.” He wrapped his arm around my waist and stroked my hair with the other.

“No.” I pulled away to look into his piercing blue eyes. “I have to go alone. I can not put your life in danger. You have so many people here that you must protect I can not ask you to abandon them.. no matter how much I wish for you to join me.”

“Okay, I’ll stay. But only until it is safe here. As soon as I get an opportunity to leave, I will. I will rush to your side, even if I can not have you I will do everything in my power to protect you.” His eyes began to water as he bent down on one knee taking my hands in his, “I promise I will survive whatever is coming and I will come for you.”

Nodding my head and wiping my tears I walked to my horse but before I reached her I was spun around and our lips met. For the first time in over a year I kissed the man I truly loved not afraid of who might see, because I was leaving and he was staying. I pulled away resting my forehead against his wishing I could stay here forever.
