Clock-Watcher

There must always be a clock nearby

Analog with a crooked second hand

Is and Vs that are loosing their meaning

To flashing phone screens

Beeping boxes that flash and hum

Wristwatches with glowing faces

There must always be a clock nearby

So that I may always see the time

Eliminating the uncertainty of life

Through a constant pattern

Numbers that repeat the same way

Day after day after day

There must always be a clock nearby

The corporal need to be on time

If I can’t satisfy those who trust in me

What kind of person am I?

Losing myself in ticks and tocks

I know each second like an old friend

There must always be a clock nearby

Nervous pacing on cold tile floors

Intently waiting for the number to change

Cut the clock up like a piece of pie

Into savory intervals that taunt and tease

Fifteen more minutes, now ten, now five

There must always be a clock nearby

A refuge from time’s impending march

Ensuring that I never miss a second

Or blink when a moment arrives

I wait patiently for the moments to come

With my eyes glued to the clock
