My journey from the abyss was filled with fear and dread. Tired, driven to madness, and the hunger pains my insides. I pull myself into the pale moonlight, looking for the witch who summoned me. I see her, at the opening of my former prison. She seems lovely but I am ravenous, I am wary from the long road back, and the thirst has driven me mad. I must feed.
By the time the UFOs landed Lara knew it was over. Thousands of years of human civilization down the drain. The president gave up without so much as a whimper. No nukes fired, not even a surface to air missile. Nothing! He just turned it all over. This followed all over the world, as if all the leaders in the world already had a retirement plan ready. She knew this would happen, she knew five years ago.
Lara walked into the press briefing with the president. He went to the microphone and started delivering a concession speech she hadn’t written or even seen. It was as if it was being beamed through him, there was no teleprompter and that was the most mystifying thing. He couldn’t get two words out she hadn’t written for him on that prompter. She knew this was all part of the plan. Their plan.
Joe has his regular Halloween decorations up. I always love his lights, the way they shine off his little pond. He added a new feature this year which is kind of cool, a whole slew of skeletons, all dressed up differently. It is so creative. I know he’s visiting his sister, I bet he wouldn’t mind if I took a little tour.
I walk through his garden gate, through all the kid-friendly stuff, Mickey Mouse dressed up as a pumpkin and the sort. The good stuff was always over past the pond. I walked gingerly and started to get a weird feeling. The closer I got to the skeletons I realized they were just the skulls on sticks. Closer and closer, weirder and weirder.
I got to the start of the skeleton displays and noticed how realistic the clothes were. They didn’t look like the odd plastic-y clothes you get at the Halloween stores, they were real. I can’t put my finger on it but I think these are real people’s clothes.
I tripped and fell on my way to the sixth skeleton and the skull fell off the stick. Suddenly its eyes opened. The damned thing had eyes! I noticed a shadow behind me, reflecting from the light displays. It was Joe and he had an axe above his head, swinging it at me…
Why can’t you hear me? I scream My confidence quakes with uncertain emotion I scream My life hurts my body and my soul shatters its shell I scream My world empties into a poison and I live in hell I scream My heart poisons my bloodstream & darkens my chi I scream I rage, I tear at my reality I scream Why can’t you hear me?
The burial dirt around the plot began to shift. You could hear the creature beneath it scratching and clawing its way out. The dirt exploded around where the coffin was buried and the creature emerged, dragging the coffin lid with it. As the creature dropped the lid it launched itself across the yard to where the young man was standing, as the creature passed the boy, the boy’s head went flying off. The creature turned its attention to the young boy’s older sister and as it did it screeched in a horrible way, the crescendo of the damned. The creature hurled itself into the young girl and took possession of her body. The newly corporeal demon looked around its new environment and stretched its new arms to the heavens as if to say, “I’m here and there’s nothing you can do about it.” As the newly corporeal demon girl-creature headed to the exit of the graveyard it looked down the hillside and realized it hadn’t eaten yet. It then headed for the village below. It was so hungry.
Gerald: “Veronica, I simply don’t know how to tell you this. I’ve wanted to tell you for so long but I don’t want to put you in any danger. Before we can move forward though, I feel like you need to know, I am Failsafe”
Veronica: stares blankly and suddenly bursts into laughter “hahaha, oh Gerry, you’re the one in danger, I am Ultra Richter, prepare for your destruction!”
