Shards of glass scattered from a mirror broken in the fight. Necklaces spilling out of a jewlerly box knocked on the ground by a missed attack. A chair on its side knocked over during my fall. Blood smeared across the floor from my attemps to escape. My body thrown on the floor once you were finished with me. You never liked cleaning up your messes.
I ran down the street looking for anywhere to hide but all I saw were locked up houses. I needed to find somewhere to disappear into before the police officers caught me again.
Why did I have to punch that guy? I'm so stupid when I'm angry. He really deserved it though, he had tried to steal my purse from right off my shoulder. But all anyone, including the police officers, saw was me punching him. This is so unfair.
I reached the end of the street and turned the corner. I scanned the row of houses and was disappointed until I saw a small, run-down shop nestled between the houses. I ran through the door, which had a hand-painted sign hung on it that said, Alma’s Witchcraft: potions, charms, and more. I barely noticed the sign as I quickly shut the door behind me. I grinned, the police officers would never find me in here.
I glanced around the store and saw shelves lining every wall full of strange knick-knacks. A shelf full of bottles of colorful liquids caught my eye. They seemed like they were glowing.
“Welcome to my store, dear! Is there anything I can help you find?” An old woman who I guessed was Alma called, startling me. She was sitting at the counter which was covered in small charms.
She seemed nice enough to let me stay a while, but I needed a reason to be here so I answered, “I'm just looking for uh…”
Alma interrupted me, “I sense you need to hide yourself, would you like to try a disguise potion?” She was right, which creeped me out a little. I had been expecting a fake shop pretending to have magical objects to trick people out of their money.
“Yeah that'd be pretty useful” I wondered if this would work. If it did I wouldn't have to deal with the police officers, I could just disguise myself until it all blew over or until I could leave town. Alma walked over to the shelf of bottles and grabbed a bottle with a deep purple liquid.
“Take a sip of this and say what you want your disguise to be, then you will be transformed.”
“Thank you.” I said as I took the bottle from her.
“How much does it cost?” I was glad that guy wasn't able to take my purse because I really needed this potion, no matter how much it cost.
“It's a gift,” Alma smiled at me, “but remember magic comes with a price, are you willing to pay?”
“But you said it was free?” I was confused by Alma’s contradiction.
“Magic’s price isn't money, be careful with that.” Alma said mysteriously.
This is perfect. I place the last rose petal next to her bloody head. I couldn't wait until her boyfriend walked in and I got to see his reaction to the beautiful scene I set up. I really went all out. I changed the lights to red, laid out rose petals, and of course stabbed the girl to death.
I smiled, this excitement was why I did what I did. People called me evil, insane, heartless- I had heard it all during the news reports on my kills- but they didn't know what the thrill of killing someone, the satisfaction of setting up the perfect crime scene, or the pride of being all over the news felt like.
“Goodbye,” I whispered to the corpse before I left to find a hiding spot where I could watch her boyfriend’s reaction when he came to visit her soon.
Blood. Blood everywhere. It was the first thing I saw as I stepped into my new boss’ laboratory. I had seen blood from cuts and scrapes before, but this was different. It covered the walls and floors, it filled the jars that sat on the shelves lining the walls, it dripped off the operating table in the middle of the room. The huge amount of blood excited me, experiments with the human body had always fascinated me. I had applied for the job of being the mad scientist's apprentice because I had heard he performed experiments on humans and that he was trying to discover things that would change the world. I was so honored to be a part of these experiments, sure they killed the patients but a few lost lives was worth the knowledge the mad scientist would gain
I stepped into the laboratory and noticed the mad scientist leaving his office to join me in his laboratory.
“Hello. You must be my new apprentice, right on time.” He said when he saw me.
“I'm so honored to be your apprentice. I couldn't even imagine being late to this amazing opportunity.” I replied.
“Perfect. Are you ready to observe my next experiment?” He asked.
I smiled, “Of course.”
He waved for me to follow him so I walked after him into a room with jail cells filled with people along the walls. They must be the patients, I thought to myself. The mad scientist pulled a key out of his pocket and unlocked the door to one of the cells. He reached in and quickly grabbed the nearest person's wrist. She was a short, long-haired woman with a terrified look on her face. She must not realize the importance of these experiments.
“Your turn,” the mad scientist said with an excited smile on his face. He must love his work as much as I do. I followed them back into the laboratory and watched as he forced the women onto the table and tied her wrists and ankles to the table. He grabbed a scalpel and told me, “Eventually I will teach you everything I know, but today you will just learn the basics.”
“Yes, sir,'' I couldn't wait until the day when I knew as much as the mad scientist did.
Suddenly the door to the laboratory burst open and a squad of police officers burst in, armed with guns. They began shouting orders to us and into their radios. When they grabbed the mad scientist I yelled, “No! Don't take him away! His experiments are going to be ground-breaking!”
The officer closest to me turned, grabbed me too, and shouted, “Let's take this kid too. I think he's working for that evil scientist.”
No, they can't do this to us. The mad scientist is a genius. We were going to make history together. I began to struggle against the officer but it was no use. He was so much bigger than me, I was never going to break free. I gave up. the world would never get to see the result of the mad scientist's brilliant experiment, all they would ever see was the lives that were lost to make them possible when that didn’t even matter.
If I survived this I would forever look back and wonder why was I so stupid, why were we all so stupid. My friends and I decided we should play truth or dare, that game NEVER ends well. When I had to pick truth or dare, I decided to impress my friends with a little bravery and pick dare.
My friend smiled evily and said, “I dare you to open the creepy grave in the woods.” Everyone gasped, no one even wanted to walk near that grave, now I to touch and open it, should I actually do it? If I did it my friends would be really impressed and they would tell everyone about my act of bravery, I had to do it.
Everyone walked into the creppiest part of the woods, it was always so full of fog that it was hard to see anything. I took a deep breath and pulled the lid of the grave off, suddenly a ghost came rushing out of the grave and it was obviously angry. We all ran as fast as we could but we weren’t faster then the angry ghost.
Week One-Captain McIvory: We have just left Planet E-037 and have begun our journey to the undiscovered solar system on Spaceship- 243, The Purple Jewel. Our supplies are fully stocked and all of the ship's systems are in good condition except for a strange rumbling sound coming from the walls of the engine room. It isn't a large concern. The trip should go smoothly.
Week Two-Assistant Captain Jones: We are making good time and everything in the ship is in good condition except the walls in the engine room. The view of stars and planets is amazing. Soon we should be able to see my home planet, F-146, common name: Athena. We will only be able to see it as a small dot but it will still be comforting to see the planet where all my friends and family are. I miss them but we all needed money and this job is well-paying. I am grateful to be able to send them money to take care of themselves.
Week Three- Captain McIvory: Almost everything is in good condition and we are still making great time. The rumbling sound has gotten louder but still is not very concerning. That is all that is needed in a journal entry. Assistant Captain Jones needs to learn that his opinions and feelings dont always belong in his duties.
Week Four- Assistant Captain Jones: We have been traveling for almost a month and we should arrive at the new solar system by next week, since we are still making great time. The weird sound is also coming from the walls in the ship's bathroom and it is getting louder in the engine room. We tried to find out what's causing the noise but nothing unusual is in the walls. Captain McIvory probably won’t like this but I can't stop thinking about Athena. We've heard news about wars between planets and I'm really hoping my family and friends on Athena are okay. I'm so worried about them.
Week Five- Captain McIvory: We landed on the planet furthest from the new solar system’s star. It is too cold to survive and there is no breathable air so we are still trapped in this spaceship. It feels like it is getting smaller and the noise is still getting louder. It has gotten so loud that it can be heard throughout the whole ship. I need to stop it or I'll go crazy. I also need to stop Assistant Captain Jones’ complaining too. He won't stop complaining about how he misses his family or how I’m too strict. Five weeks of listening to him and the repetitive rumbling sound has been too much. I hope the return trip is faster, I don't know how much more I can take.
Week Six- Assistant Captain Jones: I think Captain McIvory has gone crazy. He was shooting the engine room and bathroom walls with his blaster. I think hearing the rumbling sound for six weeks made him lose his sanity. I tried to calm him down by telling him he was being unreasonable and that he needed to take a deep breath but he yelled at me to respect him and his authority and tried to shoot me with his blaster. I'm hiding in a storage compartment. I'm really hoping he won't find me. I've sent out a SOS signal but I don't know if anyone recieved it. If I don't survive I want my family and friends to know I love them and that I’m sorry I couldn't make it home.

I marked a date on my digital calendar, May 23, 3023. I had just made an appointment for a full body remodel. I was going to be able to change everything about how I looked, my too big forehead, my boring brown eyes, my too thin hair, and so many other things I had always hated seeing when I looked in the mirror. There had always been so much I wished I could change about my looks but after my full body remodeling I would finally be beautiful and flawless.I would be able to get more friends and maybe even a boyfriend. I couldn't wait to enjoy my beauty and popularity and all I had to do was get rid of my imperfections.
I walked out of my bedroom to go to my kitchen for breakfast but stopped when I saw my reflection in the mirror that hung in the hallway. It was so familiar, I wondered if it would be weird to see a new reflection whenever I looked in a mirror after the full body remodel. Even if it was, the surgery would still be worth it. It would take some getting used to but I would be happier with perfect looks instead of my old ones.. right?
I continued walking down the hallway but stopped again when I saw my picture frame. It was cycling through pictures of me, I was smiling and obviously having an amazing time in all of them. Seeing them made me smile, they reminded me of the many great memories I had. Would they still make me smile when they showed someone who looked nothing like me?
I kept walking and got to the kitchen. I grabbed a banana off the counter and sat down at my dining table to eat it. As I was eating the banana, I got a message from my friend, Annalise. She had sent me a picture of a person I didn't recognize.
“Who is that?” I messaged her.
“It's me. I just got a full body remodel!” She messaged back. I was shocked, she hadn't ever mentioned wanting a full body remodel and she was beautiful before the surgery. Now, she seemed artificial. She had lost her uniqueness.
“Wow you look great.” I messaged. I wasn’t technically lying, she was beautiful, just artificially beautiful.
“Thanks.” She messaged back.
I was starting to question if I actually wanted to get a full body remodel. But then I reminded myself that I needed to be beautiful and perfect. I was going to be more popular and happier.
I finished my banana and walked back into the kitchen to throw away the peel. I decided to go back to my bedroom. As I walked down the hallway, I tried not to focus too much on the pictures. But when I passed the mirror, I stopped and stared at my reflection. I imagined looking into a mirror and seeing a stranger. I may not have been perfect but at least I was unique. When I look in a mirror, I want to see myself, not an artificial stranger. I took one last look at my reflection before calling the beauty center and canceling my appointment.
Lucy took another swig of her beer, finishing the bottle. She could barely remember why she had decided to drink so much. But barley wasn't enough, she was in love with her best friend, Lincoln, but he already had a girlfriend but Lucy couldn't stop thinking about him. Lucy knew that she should tell him, they never kept secrets from each other, but she didn't want to ruin their friendship or upset his girlfriend. Lucy decided to just call Lincoln and tell him the truth, she was already drunk so if she got rejected it wouldn’t hurt as bad. She picked up her phone and called Lincolin. Lincolin picked up after a few rings, “Hey, Lucy.” “Hey, Lincoln. I need to tell you something important.” Lucy said. “Okay, what’s up?” Lincolin replied. Lucy took a deep breath, she was starting to regret calling Lincoln, but it was too late to turn back, so she said“Lincolin, I think I’m in love with you.” She began to regret her words almost as soon as she said them. Those eight little words had the power to solve her problem or embarrass her and make her problem so much worse. “Oh.. Lucy, I like you as a friend but you know I already have a girlfriend. Sorry.” Lincolin said. Lucy should have been expecting to get rejected but she still had had a little hope that maybe Lincoln liked her back, but that hope died when Lincoln rejected her. “Okay. We can still be friends, it won't be too awkward or anything, right?” Lucy asked, hoping that she hadn't ruined their friendship. “Actually, my girlfriend has been kind of jealous lately. I've been telling her we’re just friends, but now that you've told me that you're in love with me, I’ll feel bad every time I tell her that nothing is going on between us. Maybe it's for the best if we stop hanging out.” Lincoln said. His words devastated Lucy. She felt like the world was ending, she had been best friends with Lincoln since kindergarten and now she had ruined their entire friendship. If she had just kept her big mouth shut and kept pretending like she only liked Lincoln as a friend, their friendship wouldn't be over. “Okay, that's fine,” Lucy lied. “I need to go, bye,” Lincolin said. “Okay, bye.” Lucy replied as she hung up. She walked into her kitchen and grabbed another beer bottle. She couldn't believe she had just ruined her friendship by saying what seemed like the dumbest eight words of her life.
