What would you do with a body if you had one to hide? __ __ The heavy fall of a knife slammed down onto the chopping board. My hands were clammy and I had to make an effort not to let the knife slip out of my hand. Not to draw attention to myself. Although I was alone, I always felt like I was being watched. I steadied myself and looked around my room, then back to the mess in front of me.
No one ever questioned what they were eating if they were enjoying it… __ __ My knife was struggling to cut through tendons, so skidded from one side of the board to the other. Sweat trickled down my face, as my arms strained to saw through the gristle. Around me, the air felt heavy and stung my eyes. Suddenly, my knife slipped and fell on the floor.
Do you ever do something you regret? __ __ I gasped and jumped back. I groaned and stomped; turning around to try and calm myself down. My once clean and crisp white uniform was splattered with crimson stains. My hand instinctively reached to my face, leaving smudges running down my cheeks. I looked down at the bloody remains infront of me, my eyes darting across the board.
What would you do if someone caught you doing something bad? __ __ My heart stopped. Not wanting to look, I heard the distinct creak of a door opening behind me…
A single cough. A single shuffle. A single breath. That’s all it takes for him to realise you’re there. A single sneeze. A single stretch. A single glance. He edges towards you, he creeps forwards quietly, masking himself in the emptiness of the shadows. A single roll of the eyes. A single kick at an unsuspecting stone. A single crack of the knuckles. He lets you know he’s there, now, although only so there’s that inkling at the back of your brain, something that wants to shut the thought down with an accusation of a wild imagination. A single trip on an uneven pavement stone, a single crash of the boot as pace speeds up, a single sharp inhalation as it dawns on you that you shouldn’t be walking alone. At night. His bony fingers curl around your shaky shoulders. They drain all the balance from your unsteady stance. You fall in a crumpled heap on the harsh paving. All you have left to give is
A single cough
The day the monsters came They flung open all the doors Started screeching insulting names Stained boots pounding on the floors
The sound of the alarm Piercing the heavy air Loud bangs indicated harm Hiding places were hard to share
Alone, scared and terrified Looking for some sweet solace But if by chance you were eyed The floor was far from flawless
So, although you must keep having fun Keep the door shut tightly, might the monsters come
A hot flush scrambled up my neck and settled insistently on my rosy cheeks. Hastily, I reached for my face, trying to avoid eye contact with the beautiful girl in front of me. „Are you alright?“ She smirked in a flirty fashion, and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my scarlet ears. I gulped, trying to regain control. „Yeah,“ I giggled sweetly, groaning internally as I realised the blush was stubbornly stuck on my face in her presence, „Just a little flustered,“ I grimaced slightly after realising what I had just said. A soft smile lit up her face and I could tell it was genuine. „Well, try not to get too flustered next time you see me,“ She bit her lip and fluttered her eyelashes,“ Because otherwise by the end of this term you’ll practically be a tomato.“ She chuckled and what followed could only be described as that awkward pause in movies before the main characters kiss…
A tingling presence in the back of my head. Nagging at me. Like when there’s something you can’t quite remember. Then a loud rumbling sound. Shaking my bones and the harsh floor around me. Any grey fills my vision, consuming me until there is only dark. A noise like a cymbal pierces the deafening quiet like a harpoon swirling through the water. Sweat trickles down my forehead, moistening my dry hair. A shiver runs down my spine.
I could feel his otherworldly presence behind me. His hollow eyes burning the back of my head.Dread consumed my body as I slowly turned around to him, face to deathly face. The smoke swirled up into the foggy sky behind him, blending with the ashy grey of his smoky gown.Roses and ivy climed up his wiry legs, rooting him to the dusty floor. As he outstretched a shaky finger, he let out a deep groan. His jaw opened wide, a black hole sucking in all life surrounding. I took a deep breath and my eyes flickered shut…
„I WANT TO GO HIGHER KATY!“ Sara screeched. It was not cold, per say, but it was definitely breezy. As she flew higher and higher, a gust of wind brushed through her honey blonde locks. „I can’t!“ Katy moaned, letting out an over exaggerated sigh. She was almost the polar opposite of Sara, where she had bright blonds ringlets, Katy‘s hair was as dark and pure as the night, her striking green eyes were stars lighting up her sweet, olive skin.
„WOOHOO!“ Sara called out into the cool, open space, a smile stretching across her face. Katy let at a chuckle, shook her head and gazed at her lovingly. „Oh Sara!“ „What?“ Sara scrunched her nose up into a frown. After a pause, the pair broke out into pure, unrestricted laughter, filling the emptiness of the playground.
But then there was another pause, and they began to realise the emptiness. The sky felt darker above them, as Katy pulled the swing to a halt. „Where‘s my Mummy?“ Sara stammered. „And where’s my daddy?“ Katy trembled, reaching for her friends hand. Sara instead grabbed Katy‘s arm and pulled her in close, so she wouldn’t feel so alone. Before Sara could burst into tears, Katy wrapped a firm arm around her, while she was still just blubbering.
But they weren’t completely alone. On a stained bench in the corner of the park, they could both make out a dark figure. „LOOK OVER THERE!“ Sara cried, pointing the the dawdling figure. „Shhh! It’s rude to point!“ Katy scowled at her. But Sara wasn’t listening. Sara had let go of Katy‘s hand. Sara was running towards the bench. Katy groaned but stumbled after her nonetheless.
The pair didn’t stop until they could make out every line on the face of the old man in front of them. A sinister smile began to spread across his face. But Katy had a bad feeling. He wasn’t smiling with his eyes.
Two hands Almost intertwined But yet somehow A world apart
Two eyes Almost locked But yet something Shields their view
Two lips Almost meeting But yet somehow Drifting away
Two hearts Almost synced But yet something Changes the pace
Two bodies Almost one But yet somehow Never close
Farewell, my almost lover
