We were visiting a family friend on his farm.
I remember running through the cornfield, towards the forest behind the farm.
We entered the woods, stepping over the rocks on the ledge. Green floura grew through the cracks of the rocks reaching towards the warm golden sun. Yellow flowers began to bloom, dotting the ground how crystals sparkle in granite. We follow the lightly tread dirt path.
I followed my brothers, thorns snagging on my skin. As we journeyed further into the forest. They pointed out different creatures, I remember a fox scurrying across the trail.
The family friend led us up towards a cliff, off the trail. It was a small divot in the ground and tree roots seemed to encase it. He told the story passed on to him, of how the natives would use this spot as a lookout. He called it the Eagle’s nest.
I remember the view as I sat nestled in the lookout. You could see the lake shimmering in the bright summer sun. I could see over the trees and the roads leading to another barn. he pointed to it explaining that the lady who showed him this spot used to live there.
We continued down the path jumping from rock to rock. It was an old quarry. Me and my brothers climbed the side of the rock walls, the thrill of adventure racing through our veins. We continued the hike, stopping to explore the deep crevices carved by the glaciers hundreds of years ago. We climbed the mossy rocks, going deeper, searching small caves, jumping over the ledges to the other side. It was a day I will never forget.
The key swings loosely from his neck. He wanders further down the hall. Red splatters dot the floor. The faint sound of children echoes in the dark empty space. Their voices haunting him, he remembers the horrors they displayed.
The chicken nuggets thrown across the room, and ketchup packets thrown on the floor. He uses the key to unlock the janitor closet. I will have my revenge. He thinks to himself as he grabs the mop aggressively.
She grinned, the cold air rushing through her tangled brown hair. The horse, steadily increasing speed. She crouches on the saddle feeling the rythm of the hooves, feeling the familiar sensation of her horse koda. her bare feet cool against the leather. The audience watches intently, children watching in anticipation. Slowly the girl extends her legs standing on the white speckled horse. She drops the reigns and the horse slows to a walk, trotting around the ring, the warm sunset shines a golden light on the girl’s smile. Slowly she transfers her weight to her hands, kicking her feet in the air, her spine curving over her head, feet dangling over her face. Koda still at a steady trot. Amidst the roaring applause, a silent tear fell, reflecting the untold story she could never tell. She sat back down on the saddle, suddenly reminded of her home. As she brings Koda back to the trailer, she strokes his head. “You’re the only one I’ve got left.”
The candles flickered yellow against my dining room wall. My sister, hair adorned with pink scrunchies and a cheesy grin watches as I blow out the 6 candles. We giggle and squeal in excitement when my parents bring a gift to the table.
12 years later I find myself sitting in the same chair. My sister once so young now sits arms crossed, those ripped jeans we used to make fun of and plain hair. My parents sit at the end of the table, wrinkles creased into the corners of their eyes as they smile. The candles count 18. I breath in my last breath as a kid, and blow out as an adult.
Its graduation day. We wander the halls we spent days gossiping and stressing over tests, where we met friends and made stupid decisions. My friends and I chat, anxious. We adjust our caps. I hear my name and walk to the front of the stage to collect my certificate. I see my family cheering in the front row, and I smile. I made it.
Today I leave for college. My mom tries to hold back her tears, masking a smile on her face, little does she know im wearing a mask of my own. My sister helps unload boxes, and I organize my dorm. When darkness begins to blsnket the sky I hug my family goodbye one by one. a singular tear escaping my eye. “Be careful out there.” My dad says, parting at last.
The old gieser walks into the door led by his tween granddaughter. She struts up to the counter, quickly reapplying her summer friday lip gloss, before spitting out her order.
“I’d like a carmel macchiato with extra carmel and whipped cream.”
The cashier nods and totals the purchase.
“My name is Nova.” She says before the cashier asks.
“Ok, and for you sir?”
“Get me a coffee.”
Nova stares at her grandpa.
“You have to specify. What kind of coffee?” She explains
“I just want a plain coffee.” He says short tempered.
“Ok and for a name?” The cashier asks
“Why do you need my name? Im right here, just fill up the cup and give it to me.” He demands. When they leave the counter Nova whispers,
“that poor cashier, you shouldn’t have been so rude.”
“Your generation is too soft. when will you speak your mind instead of gossiping behind people’s back like children?” Nova rolls her eyes And takes a selfie for the insta The grandpa stares out the window. The waitress serves the coffee. They turn their attention Back to each other. “How was your day?” Nova asks, changing the topic “It was good. And yours?” He responds “It was lovely.”
“YEEEEE HAAAAWW!!!!!! I’m a cowboy baby!”
Cornelius galloped through the desert, his companion, Fred not far behind. “Corneeeeeelious!!!!!” He whines. Cornelius rolled his eyes. And steers his pony round. “Yes Fred?” “when are we gonna take a break?” He whines. “We take no such breaks.” Cornelius puffed out his chest. “Listen Cornelius… I didn’t think it would have to come to this but we’ve been searching for days and haven’t made much progress, maybe we should head back “No way! We have come to far to abandon the search!” “How do we know we can even believe this thing is real? That old man was crazy and you know it.” Cornelious stops and turns his horse to face Fred. “He’s not crazy. I wont stop until I find…” Cornelious was cut short, when all of the sudden a bloodcurdling scream echos aross the desert. It rings in Cornelious ear, the ground rumbles beneath their feet. Slowly the sound dissapates and Fred looks to Cornelius in horror “What was that?” He says, his voice trembling He scans the desert, all he can see is endless miles of desert. The feeling is eerie, knowing something is out there, and they are all alone in the middle of nowhere. “Fred!” Cornelious exclaims He points towards the East. “Do you see that?” Fred squints his eyes and barely makes out a figure on the horizon, slowly walking towards them. “Do you know what this means!” Cornelious says excitedly “We’re dead.” Fred says. The figure becomes clearer as it gets nearer. It has an almost human outline yet much taller the height of a normal man By this time Fred is experiencing a panic attack. His heart beats like a hammer inside of his chest, too stunned to move he watches as the monster nears “I can’t believe after all these years, I finally found him!” Cornelious yells “Its all over. goodbye world.” Fred murmers looking up at the stars
Once again the monster howls making the ground shake even more violently than before. The scream would be enough to shatter glass, if there was any in the desolate desert. “Bigfoot Isn’t even supposed to live in the desert.” Fred cries in desperation.
When the monster approaches them Fred closes his eyes and clutches the reins in fear. Surpringly the horses stay calm. Cornelious gsllops closer to bigfoot and sticks out his hand in greeting Hesitantly, Bigfoot uses two of his big hairy fingers to akwardly shake Cornelius’s hand “Hello I am Cornelious. That man sulking behind me is Fred, my trusty sidekick.” Bigfoot nods. “Well I am so glad we met. Goodbye Bigfoot.” “THATS ALL?” Fred exclaims Biggoot raises an eyebrow at the sudden outburst “Yes Fred, I went to find bigfoot, And I found him. Now I would like to go home.” He turns to bigfoot and whispers,” sorry about my friend, sonetimes he is a bit slow.” Bigfoot nids understandably. Cornelious and Fred wave goodbye. When they make it home they enjoy some lovely baked potatoes.
The end.
Isamu clasps his hands together in a final gesture of greeting. I copy him bowing my head. His figure is tall and looming, powerful from years of training. From now on he will join the king’s ranks in his army, I can only hope my training has prepared him enough for what is to come.
“Goodbye, Master Riku, I shall carry your wisdom the rest of my days.” The young warrior proclaims “I have no doubt you will.” You remember the little boy who used to race the other boys to the temple. The one who piled his plate at dinner higher than anybody else, always bounding with energy yet you also remember the boy who would cheat to avoid his studies, the nights you would spend with him disciplining him for his poor academic performance. He would lash out in frustration bearing his teeth, eyes welling in angry tears, always letting his emotions get the best of him. It wasn’t always like this however. It took years of discipline. And It certainly didn’t get any easier, but his studies got better. His anger was controlled.
I know better than most though that years of progress can be reversed in an instant. So I wish Isamu luck in his journey that is life. I wish it to be full of prosperity and contentment. I watch as Isamu walks down the beaten path, the same path generations of warriors have tread before him, wandering further and further into the countryside.
I have trained many, yet I remember their names. Their faces. Each unique, each carrying their own weaknesses. Their own strengths.
