A Little Misunderstanding

“So it was her all along?” Raesha questioned as she looked up, waiting for a response. “She leaked our information, that’s how Daun infiltrated our base the first time, and how he found us when we were in hiding.” Asher confirmed as he paced back in forth in order to figure out what our next step should be, he spoke again. “To think out of everyone, Maya would be the one to betray us!” He clenched his fists tightly. “After everything, how could she repay me like this!” The more he kept thinking about it, the more angry he got. I couldn’t bare to watch, so I left to sit outside while he gathered his thoughts. I wouldn’t want to imagine how Ray would feel about this, he’d be more upset than Asher, knowing that Maya was his best friend. Raesha was the second to leave Asher to his thoughts, she sat beside me. “How are we gonna tell Ray, and what are we going to do about Maya herself?” She sighed and her head dropped as if it had a weight inside of it. It was a tense moment for everyone, Maya was a friend to all of us, there was no way we could have seen this coming. Asher then walked out, somewhat composed but still had a scent of anger. “Asher… are you okay?” I worried, hoping he wasn’t thinking about doing anything stupid. “Daun is already powerful enough, now that he has Maya on his side, who knows what could happen.“ He kept walking, he didnt want to give our suggestions a chance. Raesha looked at me, and we both got up to follow him, to reason with him. “Come on Asher, it’s not like shapeshifting is that powerful! Plus Maya teaming up with him won’t do any good, It’ll just be us four against two, we’ll be fine.” Raesha placed her hand on his shoulder but he didn’t flinch, nor did he stop to look at her. I decided to chime in “The good news is we can interrogate her for information! She’s here on the ship so we can corner her.” Asher then stopped, still looking straight ahead. I looked a little closer at his face, he was gone with anger. “No.” “What do you mean?” “I’m gonna handle it myself” We were close to the resting quarters, where Maya usually hangs out around this time of day. Asher began to walk and I looked at Raesha for help but all she could look at was Asher, in fear. The room was empty, where was she? Maybe she was with Ray? “Um, hey guys? What’s with the tense faces, did something happen?” Maya walked in the room, coming from the sleeping quarters. Asher walked up to her, with a wielding weapon hidden behind his back. “Maya” “What’s going on?” She had a confused look on her face, as she walked toward Asher. “Why did you do it?” “What do you mean?” “You betrayed us!” “I don’t know what your talking about” “Don’t act stupid!” Maya called out to us. “Uh.. guys, what is he talking about?” She’s nervous, I don’t say anything. Neither does Raesha. Asher is a few feet away from Maya now, she’s scared. “Asher tell me what’s going on!” “You know damn well what you did!” “How could you do this to us! What would Ray think?!“ Raesha then spoke, nervously “Where is Ray?” Asher looked toward Raesha, then back at Maya, enraged. He struck her, not with his weapon but with his fist. So many questions pop up in my head. Is this really happening? Is Maya really a traitor? Did she do something to Ray? I froze as I watch Asher continue to punch Maya. Raesha ran quickly to stop Asher, but it was to late. His hands were drenched and he was sweating. It looked like the anger worn off. His eyes widened. I looked at the bloodied Maya, she was gone. Me and Raesha had to clean up the mess, while Asher went to find Ray. I felt a bad taste in my mouth creep up my throat every time I look at Maya’s body. It was for the best I told myself. She was a traitor and this would’ve had to happen sooner or later anyways. Once we finished we went to find Asher. They stood in the kitchen area, it seems like Asher just got here.
Ray is confused, as he looked down at the bloody sight of Asher’s hands. “Are you okay? What the hell happened?” Ray looked at each and everyone of us and stepped closer. “Ray, are you hurt?” I was worried, but not as worried as I’ll be when we have to tell him what happened with Maya. “I’m alright, why are you guys acting so weird?” Asher’s voice chimed in. “I’m sorry Ray, Maya is…” his voice wavered and cowered down, it seemed like his anger was replaced with regret. “Whats wrong with Maya?” Still confused, Ray pryed for further information. “Can you guys just spill it already!” “Maya betrayed us, Ray. Asher has already taken care of her… she’s gone.” Raesha cried. Ray still stood there confused, perhaps in denial to what was being told to him. “What kind of joke is this?” His face crinkled as to try and understand what was happening. He didn’t look sad, he just looked lost. “I had to kill Maya, I’m so sorry Ray” Asher’s voice was quieter now, and more shaken. He didn’t make any eye contact. He stood there looking at the ground. “I don’t know what you guys are trying to do but, it’s not working.” Ray doesn’t look amused. “I was literally just talking to her a minute ago.” We all stood there dumbfounded. What was he talking about? Then it hit me Daun has the power to shapeshift. Could he have infiltrated our ship by turning into Maya? If that’s the case… which Maya did Asher kill?

Manifesting Bombs?

Wait? She meant blue wire? Well, this sure makes this different. I cut the red wire after her voice rang through the phone impulsively. My hand shook a little as the timer suddenly sped up by a whole thirty seconds. Even if that doesn't sound like much, when defusing a bomb thirty seconds means living or dying. I heard her voice again, a sharp panic in her tone that wasn't there before. She called my name three times before I realized that I hadn't replied yet.

"I'm getting there, okay? I'm sorry for focusing," my response was involuntary and laced with stress. I was very frustrated. She replied with an okay before I continued to cut the red wire, the timer now stopping at eight seconds. I let out a shaky breath before getting out from under the congressman's vehicle. I wiped the sweat and grease from my forehead before turning to the older man with a stoic expression.

"Thank you so much, young man. My life could have ended today," the congressman breathed out in a certain relief reserved for only these near death experiences.

"It was no problem, sir. My team and I are only here to be sure of your safety as we investigate this case, " I assured the man. I had a feeling that this bomb wouldn't be the last. I walked back to my government-provided SUV just as flames rose from an explosion only four cars down. I was knocked over from the blow, and groaned miserably as I tried to sit up. My only thought was about why I couldn't manifest a million dollars as easily as lethal bombs.

Regretful Mistakes

A small gasp escapes from her _o _shaped mouth when my shaky hand plunges the knife into her gut. Wide watery eyes meet my as tears shower from her eyes like never ending waterfalls. “I-I told you I didn’t cheat…I-I told you I wouldn’t lie…W-why won’t you…why didn’t you believe me.” She stutters out through broken tears and groans of pain. The knife shivers at my unstable hand. I just wanted to scare her, I never meant to stab her. Hatred still fills my expression despite my fear. “Lenora told me he had his hand on your hip. You were smiling and blush-“ She’s quick to cut me off in my crusade. “Lenora is a caniving- agh…A caniving bitch who wants to- ow…Wants to…Wants to steal you from me, from your…” She stops, the speech halting before her lips do. She grunts out in agony when I pull the knife. A deep red crimson stains my hand as it drips from the blade, red runs from her gut to her hips and side. I can’t look, even in my memories I can’t. A final cry leaves her lips as she limply falls into my arms. She’s like a sack, devoid of life. Her once shiny eyes dulled over with a goo like substance. I drop her crimsion staining my reflection. Shrill cries escape my mouth as I fall to my knees with a thunk. I pick her limp body onto my lap and caress her hair one final time. Red bleeds into her blonde hair from my dirty hands but I couldn’t stop myself. I weep myself numb as a way of goodbye to her. ——————————————————————————————————————————————————— My bitten lips shut as I tell the detective in brown all the details to the final moment he arrested me. He sighs and takes me to the jail cell, where I’ll rot. My sanity dying as her body decays. I close my eyes in sweet acceptance of my punishment as I breathe my last breath of free air.

The Cost Of Misunderstanding

She hadn’t spoken to her mother in months. A couple of years ago Ellie had moved out, into a small share house with a few uni friends. She’d made the effort to see her mother a few times a month, mostly stopping by for dinner after her shift at the local daycare.

On a crisp morning in September, her mother had called asking if she’d like to come over for a family dinner that weekend. Ellie hadn’t wanted to- having had quite a busy week a night on the couch was calling to her.

“Ellie please- it’s really important to me that you come,” she’d pleaded through the phone.

“Mum I don’t know if I’ll be feeling up for it I-“

You need to be there. I never ask you for anything but Im asking you for this. It’s important.”

Ellie has turned up at 7:39pm, with a bottle of wine in hand only mildly late. There was another car in the driveway which she didn’t recognise.

“Hi mum, did you get a new car or something?”

“Oh hi Elle, we’re in here!”

As she turned the corner into the lounge she saw her mum sitting on the couch, with a man sat next to her, his hand gently placed on her thigh.

Ellie felt the contents of her stomach turn, felt the blood in her veins start to run hot.

Her mum started, “come sit darling, we have something to tell you,” patting the chair opposite her.

“What the hell mum?”

Her mothers eyes widened, mouth falling slightly ajar as her daughters heart rate quickened.

“You only left dad a month ago and now what? Now you’ve found some new guy that’s- no offense- at least 10 years older than you!”

Ellie continued her rant for the next few minutes, all the while her mother and the stranger tried to intervene, “No darling you’ve got it wrong- we aren’t”

“How dare you,” Ellie whispered harshly before she fled out the front door.

Almost 4 months later she received a call from a private number. She tended to let them go to voicemail- but something in her heart told her to answer.

“Hello?”

“Ellie Watson?”

“Yes?” her eyes started to brim at the urgency in the callers voice.

“It’s your mother, she’s been admitted and isn’t looking too good…”

Ellie’s ears rang out.

“She’s unstable at the moment- she never gave us her do not resuscitate preference, would you happen to know?”

“Would I happen to- we never spoke out that?”

“Not even throughout her treatment- she knew there was a high chance of it going this way.”

“She knew- what do you mean?”

“Ellie,” the callers voice grew soft, “when was the last time you spoke to your mother?”

“Months ago…” she responded, voice hoarse.

“She has stage 4 lung cancer. How quickly can you get here?”
