Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein had been before her time. She could dream it but no one at that time could create it. But now in 2023 an ambitious but reckless young doctor was going to make it happen.
At a young’s age he had received the nickname Frankenstein. This loved the nickname and even more he couldn’t get enough of that original story. He could practically recite Mary Shelley’s book by the time he was In high school. Once in high school he decided he’d become a Doctor. His obsession with this character would fuel his research. Before anyone else could he would make this story a reality.
Excelling in college he was able to convince his teachers and peers to call him Dr. Frank. He did so well that he received funding for a research program that involved reviving limbs and organs that had failed or been severed. This was where his obsessive personality really started to show through. He spent more time in the lab then he did outside of it. While his peers worried for him, his investors encouraged him onward. He was making real discoveries in the field.
He shared his end goal with no one, worried that one of his peers might try to steal his fame. Having graduated from college and moved to to research full time he was beginning to feel close. He successfully reanimated a rat one night and knew it was now or never.
It took a painstakingly long week to gather up the bodies he needed to make it happen. He was able to reanimate a man, not for long but he did accomplish something no one else had ever done. He tried another time with very similar results. Finally with one more tweak he made it happen.
It was a cold rainy night when it happened. He had to conduct his experiments in the middle of the night to maintain his privacy. He shocked the man to life. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting but when the man regained consciousness he immediately spoke. The man grabbed Dr. Franks shoulder and said,“How long have I been asleep? It must be close to a thousand years.”
The guardian laid motionless on her pedestal. The woman approached with caution holding her breath. Was this truly the same person she danced with all that time ago. As a dragon her life was eternal. She mistook the guardian for a human and so quit searching for her. ‘I regret not finding you sooner my love.’ She took the pale green hand of the guardian into hers, god it was so much smaller than her large calloused hand that was darkened by the sun in her desert homeland. She pressed her lips to the small knuckles and then leaned forward to leave a kiss on her forehead. She pulled back not knowing what would happen next, if anything. Liza swallowed her tears but wouldn’t take her eyes off of her love. Suddenly a burst of energy emanated from the guardian. It pushed Liza back slightly. Then the guardians eyes flashed open. She looks around only to find Liza standing there staring at her with her mouth hanging open. The guardian smiles, ‘I’m glad it’s you.’ She tries to sit up but fails to sit up on her own. ‘Goodness how long have I been asleep? A thousand years? I feel so stiff.’
“How long have I been asleep? It must be close to a thousand years.” The dryad trapped in a slowly corrupting Forrest spoke in the sleek slender arms of the elf. “You dramatic piece of driftwood, you got high again, didn’t you?” Eyed down the barbarian cradling the dwarf acorn dryad in his veiny arms.
“Found a new mushroom… have you noticed how the waters full of ugly tree people?”
“If Wiz was here he’d tear your leaves in two with that.”
“Thanks archer”
“You little goblin”
“So how far till your place”
The barbarian dropped the dryad and held his arms up with a dead faced look ahead.
“I’m not falling for the ‘it tastes like maple syrup’ hogwash again”
“Must’ve been a bad batch”
“Next time I’m turning you to mulch…”
Bzzt, Bzzt, the world glitches with a voxelated effect; cubes shake in to place and disappear, as a blue hue makes place for full color, while Logistic and Maintenance Droid 3 restarts.
LM3 begins a physical systems check. No areas of major damage detected. Limited movement in right arm and hand. Require basic maintenance.
They then try to access their data banks, bits and pieces of information are available but most of it seems to be corrupted or straight up missing.
The last recorded event is only a couple of seconds long. A woman screaming, a man yelling followed by an explosion.
LM3 tries to recollect who they where, their job, their purpose. This proofs uncharacteristically hard for the android, who usually have perfect recollection of events. However eventually they are able to piece together that they must have been part of some sort of mining outfit around the planet Triaxus.
They are currently in a an android resting pod, LM3 looks door the glass door, but it is to dirty to make out anything. They push against the glass and the door opens with a hiss.
Fragments of recollection tell them this must be the maintenance bay of their mining ship, although it looks like nobody has been here for... centuries? Everything is covered under a thick layer of dust.
Against their better judgment they try opening the automatic door to the main passageway. Nothing happens. They pry their fingers between the small slither of the heavy metal sliding doors and force the doors apart.
LM3 explorers his decrepit ship, a protocol of his "logistic and maintenance" programming springs in to place and starts making a list of everything that requires his up keep: basically everything.
They make their way to the bridge, after they pry open those doors, they are surprised by what they see. There is a huge whole, that stares right in to open space, where the mining and weapons officer used to sit.
This must have been where the explosion had taken place LM3 thinks to them selves. They take moment to take in the destroyed room, a bunch of the tinniest slivers of memories of a time long ago, when the bridge was still heavily used, come back to them. He must have been a part of the crew for a while. They try using the coms, but obviously they don't work.
They search the rest of the ship, trying to find out what happened to the crew, how long they have been out, or anything really, but after an hour or two they don't learn anything useful.
Over the next few days they scramble together a bunch of electronics, and build a device that should sent out a distress signal. But they have little hope of somebody coming to their rescue, an old android stuck on a ship.
How long have I been asleep? It must have been a thousand years. Turns out I was only blind Put on a pair of new glasses to look through Because I had figured I was in love Before I met you I put them on and when the flags popped up I never saw their red hue I only noticed their shimmer and ripples in the wind "How beautiful they are. It's like they were planted here just for me. How kind of him." I thought everything was pink Because I had figured I was in love I took them off to see if there were any other colors And I said "Look how beautiful!"
And you stopped when you noticed I was no longer blinded. You stared in disgust.
I’m too impatient to rewrite, so this is just a first draft :/ — — — —
How long have I been asleep? It must have been close to a thousand years.
No one responds anymore. No one starts talking with me. No one follows me out the door into the cool, September breeze. No one twirls in the sunshine That enhances your judging eyes. “Who is that girl? She’s so incomplete.”
But I’m more complete than you. Without that little trinket in your hand, what are you? what is your life? oh wait, there isn’t one. You’re a drop in the world, and yet you still shrink.
I’ll work hard, while you sit there, staring at your screen. I’ll enjoy the world, while you brain clouds with useless sounds. I’ll improve myself, while you fall into that deep abyss. I’ll rise to where I’ve never been, and you’re so far, can’t even fall.
How long have I been asleep? It must have been close to a thousand years.
Funny how the world can change, With just one small thing Inside it holds your whole brain So one day when you grow up And you use your own two feet, I hope you might look up from that And someday you’ll be complete.
Once upon a time in a distant future, a man named Ethan woke up to find himself lying on a crude makeshift bed in what appeared to be an abandoned building. As he gazed around, he realized that the world he now found himself in was drastically different from the one he remembered.
The cityscape outside was crumbling, overrun by nature and ruins from a long-forgotten civilization. Ethan stumbled out of the building, engulfed by a post-apocalyptic nightmare. Everywhere he looked, there were remnants of destruction and chaotic signs of humanity's downfall. From zombies lurking in the shadows to robots wandering aimlessly, this new world was an amalgamation of horror and technological remnants.
Confused and disoriented, Ethan searched for answers about how he had ended up 1000 years in the future. Memories of the past slowly resurfaced, but the reason for his time leap remained a mystery. Driven by determination, he roamed the desolate land, battling his fear and loneliness, searching for a purpose in this nightmarish reality.
Amidst the decaying world, Ethan's heart skipped a beat as he caught a glimpse of a familiar face. It was Claire, a woman he had once been deeply in love with during their college years. She looked as confused as he was, but a glimmer of recognition sparked in her eyes as well.
Racing towards each other, their hearts swelled with relief and comfort. Together, they unraveled the new world, piece by piece. They formed an unbreakable bond, relying on each other for strength and solace. Surviving became their shared purpose, as they discovered ways to evade the lurking zombies, navigate the remnants of war-torn cities, and outsmart the corrupted robots.
With Claire's considerable knowledge of survival skills and Ethan's adaptability, they established a small haven amidst the chaos. They fortified a humble sanctuary where they sought refuge from the outside dangers. Their love blossomed once again, a beacon of hope amidst the despair.
As the years went by, Ethan and Claire built a community of survivors who depended on their leadership and resilience. They created harmony from the ruins, transforming forgotten buildings into shelters and even managing to repair certain parts of the devastated city. Their determination to rebuild a semblance of civilization and protect what remained of humanity fueled their spirit.
Through their love and devotion, Ethan and Claire showed their fellow survivors that hope could still exist, even in the darkest of times. They stood as a symbol of endurance and unity, guiding their newfound family towards a brighter future.
Though the questions of how and why Ethan had traversed a millennium of time remained unanswered, he found solace and purpose in the arms of the woman he loved. Together, they overcame the odds and embraced their destiny in a world that had become both their prison and their realm of possibility.
