“He sacrificed his life to save mine… after all I did.” I mutter to myself as I watch the guards hang the man on a cross. I watch as his mother cries and the blood stains the wood of the cursed tree. I knew this was my fault, I was so selfish, I was persuaded by the money of one of his disciples who turned to be a crooked man. The man looks so peaceful on the cross, not angry, but like he has a contentment in his heart. He asks for a drink and the guards give him some sour wine. He sips it and then, he cries his final words, “It is finished.” Suddenly, the sky goes dark and the ground rumbles. Men, women, and children scream but I just stand there, in awe,
Three days pass, and on Sunday, two women race through town, grinning so happily that I almost think something amazing has happened, like someone coming back to life, like… I race after the women and listen as they tell John, and some other men shocking news. “Jesus . . . Empty Tomb . . . Angel!” Is all I can make out, they talk so fast their words sound slurred. John and another disciple zip out they house and I tip-toe after them. I listen as they examine the empty tomb, only a few rags are left.
Word spreads that Jesus is back, and everyone is shocked. I begin to believe, and on his last day on earth before returning to his Father, I except him as my Savior.
“Lord, thank you for sending Your Son to die for us on the cross for our sins and rise again on the third day. We were unholy and unjust, but you didn’t care, you loved us. Please send this message to whoever doesn’t believe, so that they may come to know you. We all need perfect love like yours. We all need you. Amen.”
Sighing, my heart aches. I know I have to do it, Captain SuperTeen told me that we all were going to tell the one we hold dearest our identity, but it hurts. I wait outside Leo’s door, listening to the footsteps of sneakers and the padding of paws, his dog, Snickers, barking loudly at the door while I suspect Hazel the cocker spaniel, is following him around. “If it is the pizza, leave it at the door.” He calls. I smile, Leo is always ordering pizza, especially on our movie nights. Suddenly, I step back and the door flings open, revealing Leo, with messy blonde hair and a T-shirt with blue jeans. “Oh, my . . .” He stutters, admiring my blue suit with a lightning bolt on it. I grab at my yellow gloves and smile nervously. “Hi . . .” Leo’s jaw hangs open, “y-you-you are . . . The LightningBolt!?” I smile, he loves superheroes, and comics, and maybe once I reveal my identity, me. “Leo.” Leo’s eyes widen, “you know m-my name?” He seems in shock, which is funny, because nothing surprises him, not even plot twists in movies or books. “Of course I know your name.” I grin knowingly. “How!?” He exclaims. I grab his hand, “It is me, Winter Ferrel.” Leo steps back. I fear he will hate me, but instead he hugs me. “Wow! How cool is that? My bestie? The LightningBolt.” He smiles proudly and I blush. “So, you aren’t mad at me for not telling you?” He shakes his head, “of course not.” His brushes his hand over my cheek, and I want to kiss him, but that would be weird. He embrace again and then he invites me for movie night. We watch his favorite movie, and during the romantic part, he actually kisses me. I couldn’t believe it but I just smiled big, because I loved him. Home amazing is it to have a boyfriend who excepts you as you are, and being a superhero. Life is pretty perfect.
My owner, Georgie, has many toys. From teddy bears, to trains, to toy dogs with cotton leashes that you expect to blindly obey you and not runaway (I will never understand why people give dogs so much of their trust). The one toy he does not have though, is a cat. I often sit upon a high shelf and enjoy looking down on him while he plays. To me, the human is the most amusing creature of all. I should write a book about them and their foolish ways. But anyway, these days were unlike any others of my short life.
Sitting on top of the bookshelf, I contently wash myself when it begins to creak. I jump off of the shelf and Georgie spots me. He lunges for my tail and I quickly pull away. I hiss at him and run off. “Toy Kitty! Toy Kitty!” He calls after me, reaching for my tail. I turn around and yowl, “I am not a toy to be used!” Georgie just keeps running after me, dismissing my rant, humans must be to dumb to understand the superior language of the cat. Suddenly, my big human grabs me and throws me into a cage. I hiss a few times and then spot my favorite toy. I wrap my tail around it and purr. Even though I am in a cage, at least I am away from Georgie and with my teddy.
The next day, my owners finally decide to let me free. I immediately jump onto my perch and continue watching Georgie. He smiles up at me and I meow back. The mother human comes up to Georgie and says, “how about you play outside?” Georgie nods enthusiastically and I follow them. Georgie giggles as he draws on the sidewalk. The mom leaves for a short second and something drastic happens. A tawny, buff dog with black eyes races towards Georgie and rams into him. He bites Georgie’s leg and it begins to bleed. The dog lunges for the innocent child’s neck when I jump down from the porch and attack the dog’s face. We hiss and growl and toss and toll. Finally, the dog pins me down and grabs my neck. I gasp for air as he flails me in his teeth. I begin to believe it was my final, sad, curtain call when a brawny tabby bites the dogs tail. It drops me and chases after the cat, leaving me as a puddle on the ground and my humans crowd around me. “She’s the bravest cat I have ever met . . .” The father human says in awe. Georgie smiles proudly and limps over to pet me. “She is my hero.”
After that, they take me to the vet where I get bandaged up. Georgie pays me respect and is gentle with me, and I finally get the gratitude I deserve. Who knows, I am like the queen cat of my household, maybe one day I will run for president. “President Olivia Paws Jackson, I like the sound of that.”
Smiling at me, with wide, glossy eyes, the creature flips her tail. Pink with gills and swimming in the water, I press my face against the glass. “Hello little girl.” I say. The creature keeps smiling and twirls in the water, sending bubbles all around. I giggle, this is my first pet after my dog passed away, and I’m in love. Her skin is the perfect shade of pink and her gills are a rosy color.
My sister comes up and admires the creature with me. It bumps into the glass but keeps smiling, smiling, smiling, no matter what. Humans should be more like this creature, people should smile more. I plop a toy castle into the tank and the creature whirls around it, sending a tornado of bubbles. I sit down on the chair next to the tank and keep watching the creature. It blows bubbles and grins at me, like it has known me its whole life, and I guess, it has. From the moment we bought it we were best friends.
Father comes up to my and ruffles my long, brown hair, “hey honey, how do you like your new pet.” I beam with happiness. “I love my axolotl, thank you, Daddy.”
Boxes pile in the front yard of my new neighbor’s house, the boxes aren’t normal sized though, they are giant, not like one that could fit a chair, but more of a monster. When I first met the new neighbors, the seemed nice enough, but every noises came from the boxes in there yard, and I became suspicious.
“Err… grr…” the noise was coming from the boxes. I climb into my bed and begin to think . . . ‘Are they really monsters and are hiding there friends in the boxes?’ ‘No, to illogical.’ I prowl around the house looking for something to use for spying when I spot it, an open door. Quickly, I sneak through the door without being spotted, and head for the neighbor’s house. I hear barking from inside and become even more stealthy, you know, because dogs hate cats. I sniff the boxes for unusual smells, but they just smell of plastic and paper.
Suddenly, I spot the neighbor’s door swinging open and a large man head for me. I duck behind a bush and wait to see something horrifying. Instead, I see extremely large and slightly demonic looking Halloween decorations. Sighing, I head back for my house when I see a giant dog looming around my yard, watching my kid. All of the sudden, it lunges forward and tugs the youngest child to the ground and the older one kicks it. I leap onto the dog and claw at it. It yowls and runs towards the neighbor’s house. “I knew something evil was going on, good thing I was hear to stop it.” I meow proudly to myself.
Cackling, Dr. Bat laches a young teenage girl to a bed. “Humans will pay for what they did to me!” The super sized bat laughs evilly as he flaps he silky black wings. I watch as my brother, SuperTeen, visibly gulps. I place my hand on his, “it’ll be okay, brother, we are superheroes after all.” SuperTeen gives a fake life and a bead of sweat rolls off his face. Suddenly, ShadowWing swoops down and kicks Dr. Bat. “Argh! You silly superheroes, always trying to foil my plans.” He grabs ShadowWing’s tail and pulls him down. Dr. Bat whispers something in ShadowWing’s pointy ear, and since I have super-hearing, I know what he says: “the humans did the same to you as they did to me. Join me, and we will defeat the human race.” ShadowWing freezes, but shakes his head “no” and Dr. Bat slings him into a capsule. “I’ll do away with him later.” The bat laughs.
My heart begins to pound, both my human best friend and my super best friend are in jeopardy. I look at my brother and he solemnly nods back. It was time. SuperTeen flies down from our place in the hole in the ceiling and I leap over Dr. Bat. Dr. Bat begins to grab his ray gun when I stop him. “We mean well.” I say, looking over at the girl on the metallic table eyeing us. “They look familiar . . .” I hear her mumble. SuperTeen looks down at his silver boots and prays at his blue gloves. “We surrender. . .” Suddenly a shadowy creature appears and grabs him, covering his mouth and making him squirm. “No!” I cry, aiming a ice rope at the creature’s standing paws. The creature jumps over the rope and runs over to the girl. “Stop!” I scream, but to my surprise, the creature frees the girl. Out of no where, a giant hawk swoops in from the window and carries the girl away. “What?” I exclaim. “We here to rescue.” The big creature says in broken English. I see ShadowWing claw at the capsule’s glass and breaks through. He runs toward me and scoops me up. “What are you doing?” I say, shocked. “Saving you.” ShadowWing jumps up to the window, when my mask blows off. ShadowWing almost rope me when he sees who I am, the real me. My mask covers my whole face and keeps my long, flow-y brown hair, so I probably look nothing like what he envisioned. SuperTeen flies up to us and smiles nervously, “yeah, that’s my sister. April Ferrel.” ShadowWing’s jaw falls open. “The girl from the experiment that went wrong?!” I nod. “It caused both my brother and I to have, well, super powers.” ShadowWing sets me down and flicks his black tail. Dr. Bat suddenly flies up and when he spots me, he looks as shocked as ShadowWing did. “You- you were in the same accident I was . . .” His voice trails off. “Yes, I know, John . . .”
The End! 😊
(Sorry, it wasn’t exactly the prompt. . . 😅)
I smooth out the notebook paper on my desk and begin to write, only, I can’t. Sitting there, I push my pencil on the desk, waiting for inspiration, but my mind is blank, like a big, black void that ate my thoughts up. I grab a cup of coffee from the kitchen and trot back to my spot at the desk, when I see a fluffy, white intruder. Smiling, I pat Snow on the head and lift her up onto the desk. “Got any inspiration?” I ask her. She bats her beautiful blue eyes and paws at my pencil. And that is when inspiration hits. I begin to write:
‘Once upon a time in a land far away, lived a cat named Snow . . .”
Years Later
The Snow and Lily bookstore overflows with customers desperate to read my fifth book in the Snow and Lily book series. I grin as I sign a little girl’s book. “Here you go, sweetheart.” I say. “Have Snow sign it to, please!” The girl begs. “Alright.” I say, grabbing my cat and placing her paw on the page. The girl giggles and runs off, her mother close behind. I watch as Snow licks her paw. “Thanks girl, for everything.”
I walk into the lovely little coffee shop and order my drink; a pumpkin spice latte, fitting for a crisp, fall afternoon. I head to my table and begin to write in my notebook, which is fitting for being an author in a coffee shop. My phone dings one of those unpleasant sounds and I read it. The words I read are like a monster, ready to devour me whole and only leave a shrivel of sadness left, my soul. I drop my phone to the floor, and listen as it shatters.
I begin to get up when someone asks me what has happened. I stare at them blankly and the words stick to my throat. I rush out of the door crying and crumple to the ground outside. “Heart... hurts. Dog is gone.” I manage to cough out when another passerby-er asks me what is wrong. When I stumble through the door of my home, instead of seeing sad faces, I see smiling friends. My jaw drops when I see what is in my mother’s hands, a tiny, black and white kitten. I scoop the kitten up and thank my mother. “Yes, the kitten will never be the same as Lilly, but she is pretty cute.” I laugh as I snuggle the kitten, “how about we name her Angel?”
“Hand it over, now!” Calls one of those annoying superheroes, flicking his fiery red tail. “This? I think I’ll keep it for now, it’ll look nice bejeweled to my outfit.” I say, swooping my gloved paw over my frosty blue and white super villain outfit. The fox snarls. “Frost!” Anger flashes in his eyes.
“Toying with my prey is what I do, you know?” I flick my wrist and ice begins to crawl up the building, following the fox. “Come on, Slick, I know you can do better than that.” I tease. He leaps up, landing on me, and we tumble to the ground. He grabs the Super Snow Gem from my paws and begins to race off in a fire ball, when I grab his tail. “You know I love you?” I tease again, batting my eyelashes and swaying my snowy white fox tail. “Fire and Ice aren’t meant to be though.” Slick says, his grip tightening on the jewel. “Neither are Supers and villains, yet look at us.” I say, smiling slyly at him. He gulps and his green eyes glisten in the moonlight.
Suddenly, I grab the jewel and smile, “I’ll be taking this back.” Then we race off, leaping from building to building, teasing each other and throwing fireballs and snow. And I know, even though he acts like he hates me, I’m his one and only, I’m his forever gal, I’m Frost and he’s Slick, a red fox and arctic fox.
Like fire and ice, so different, yet the same.
Slamming my fluffy, white paw on the table, I snarl at the German Shepherd in front of me. “How could you?!” I hiss, my tail prickling with anger. The dog snickers. “Do what? Hurt your feelings?” He mocks me, how could I fall for those eyes, those beautiful, warm eyes. I shake my feelings off. “You mauled my kid! Thank goodness I was able to stop you before it could get much worse. And now, your owner’s kid and mine are best friends! Why?” “Look, April, instincts, ya know?” The dog says. “Don’t you ‘look April’ me! I know how evil, yet strangely charming dogs can be . . .” I trail off. The German Shepherd leans forward towards me. “I’m sorry.” ‘Should I believe him? Or will he betray my trust again?’ I wonder to myself. “Kitty!” A young boy exclaims, picking me up from my spot on the mini table in the shadowed closet. “Come on, Sam.” Says a young girl, tugging on the dog’s leash. “Let’s play pretend wedding with our pets!” Exclaims the boy. The girl nods excitedly and they begin to lead us outside. “Now will we have to file a complaint against our kids?” I whisper jokingly to Sam. Sam smiles. “Oh well.”
The End.
