POEM STARTER
Write a poem through the eyes of a child, capturing their wonder at a fireworks display.
In the absence of elaborate and highly descriptive language, think how else you can capture an atmosphere of wonder.

A year ago today I was a child Fireworks Shell shock BooM Not war But war inside Right outside The window BOOM The floor sHoOk Windows RAttLEd It was pretty jarRIng Too much Too little To fill The gaping Hole In my Heart A strange place Strange feelings Strange times I never meant To leave you In the past The year was gone And so were you Two Thirty One Will forever Be engraved Imprinted In my mind Soul to ocean Body to dust Dust to air Sparkling Shining Brightly In the night sky With children below Laughing and playing With firecrackers B O O M Another sleepless night I love you too much To think of goodbyes I can’t think of fireworks Without your light
I start hearing this sound Coming from the ground
Flickering light shoot up in the air So fast and so loud
All of these colors in the sky So beautiful and so amazing
The sky was dark and the world Felt dark and scary too
But once I saw these colors in the sky The world felt happy, bright and pretty Like all the darkness was gone
The lights covered the sky so you could not see The stars
All I saw was light not darkness All I saw was not a black void with twinkling lights
But colors getting brighter and brighter than the sun and the moon
I saw blue and red, purple, yellow and green All the colors in the rainbow and anything in between
I had so many happy feeling in the world all at once
It was so wonderful and filled with color
When there I see big lights, like the sea of the skies
The sound is louder than gunshots, But the lights are so beautiful. The fire is dangerous, surely, But look at the colors.
‘There’s no such thing as magic,’ That’s what they told me. ‘Wake up,’ That’s what they said. ‘Stop dreaming.’
But look; look! Have they forgotten how to see? There are lights in the sky, Dazzling flowers, Endless rainbows Without any rain.
Am I the only one who sees it? Have their aching necks kept them from looking up? If so, They ought to lie on the grass. It’s soft. And all I can see is the sky.
And for a moment, All is right. Caught up in this strange reality, I see magic. Away from their screaming, Screaming, Screaming, I see beauty. In a place I will never return to, I see home.
Would they tell me it’s stupid? If they ever dared to feel, Could they understand that there is such power in being able to love? But… But they don’t. They lost their hope. They lost their sight. They lost their magic.
The sound is louder than gunshots, Maybe it’s trying to wake them. This one’s purple… No, it’s changed. Now vibrant yellow is exploding out of it. The fire could be dangerous, So they consider stopping.
Why do they replace my magic with mundane? I sit in their classrooms for 5 days a week. Must they take away what little wonders they’ve left me? This one sounds like it’s screaming.
The green against the deep purple sky, Ringed with pink and flanked by clouds, With a full entorage of stars. Mom? Mom, do you see it? Yes, yes you do. So why don’t you care?
The sound is louder than gunshots… Don’t make me leave. The fire is dangerous, surely… Fine. I’m coming.
bang, bang, BANG hands over ears why is it so loud? "Open your eyes, Darling" mama takes my hands wow... so many rainbows in the sky! but so loud... my breathing shakes and i sniff my runny nose "loud mama" mama smiles with pretty teeth and covers my ears the rainbows pop and glitter "Those are fireworks, Sweetie." fire works! "f-fire?" "Good fire" "pretty fire"
People often ask you what is your favorite childhood memory That is really easy for me to answer I was getting starburst’s from the hotel vending machine My heart fluttering excitedly as I waited to for the candy to drop BOOM!! CRACK!! BOOM!! My eyes quickly went to the window next to me I stood on my tippy toes so I could properly observe My eyes growing wide with excitement Staring out with baited breath I saw bright lights bursting in the sky More powerful and colorful than any starbursts It looked like real stars Exploding for our amusement I was so entranced I completely forgot my candy But I didn’t mind It’s much sweeter to unexpectedly witness magic
it was new year’s eve 2014 the fireworks would be starting soon
i was so excited i couldn’t even focus on my mom who was yelling at me cause i ate uncooked meat
“it wasnt finished !! i was gonna put it in the soup”
all i could see is the big red lever and not a sight of a permit
i couldnt help myself i ran over to the big red lever and pulled it towards me
“NOOOO”
my mom yelled but it was too late
i pulled the lever
and reached out to touch the fire
“NOOOO”
my dad yelled but it was too late
i touched the fire
it was exhilarating
the fire truck came while i laughed my head off
they took my to the hospital but at least i got to eat chocolate cake at the hospital 😊
Red and blue and yellow and green With the loud cheers of Happy New Year Children smile while being tucked into bed Knowing there is nothing to fear
Once blossom like the flower, Shapen like the moon And soon it will be the mushroom
Red and… and… and grey The cheers have died down Left with smoke and fire and tears.
